Made best friends for life in my new favourite city.
Tim Evans, 7th September 2009 - 7th September 2010
When I arrived in Australia I was supplied with a job within 3 days of arriving. Then I worked for four months in a range of different jobs, from working in a warehouse to working in a electrical store and factory work. In the time I was in Sydney I saw many events such as the Mardi Gras parade, which was an amazing experience and a must see! So glad I saw that especially with how many people were there. New Years Eve was amazing with the fireworks being a special experience to watch whilst having a 'few' beers. As well as seeing the iconic Harbour Bridge and opera house, I also loved going to the Blue Mountains- the views were breathtaking!

I left Sydney to go up the coast with surf camp. The mixture of party and all day surfing was an amazing experience. When I went up the coast my highlights were Tweed Heads/Coolangatta. Not a well known place , but amazing for the beach and surfing. I went to all the main places up the East Coast including trips of Fraser Island and Whitsundays.

On the way to Cairns the crocodile farm was really good, as you got to see crocs up close, and hold a baby one, as well as a snake and a dragon lizard. I was also feeding roos and hugging dingoes. My favourite thing of everything I did was doing my diving PADI course in Cairns. It was beautiful, as well as being able to swim with reef sharks as though they were fish.

What were the highlights of your trip?
First days in Sydney, the flexibility, getting to know the Aussie culture and awesome people, tours to Uluru, Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays, Frazer Island (booked separately), Australian Open, Cricket, spending a boiling hot Christmas

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
* be as flexible as possible: don't make too many plans beforehand and just go with the flow: you'll always meet great people on the way and it can be quite restricting to have to stick to a surten plan - just pick a couple of things you really want to see or do on your trip and take the rest as it comes
* really put yourself out there: just remember, you're in this country to get to know locals and possibly to learn the language - just because there are lots of people around who speak your first language or are from your home country doesn't mean that you should stick to them, the great thing about travelling (especially when you're on your own) is meeting lots of different people with a very different background

Give us up to 10 words that sum up your experience
beautiful country, beautiful people: a place to fall in love with!

Is there anything that would have made your experience better?
probably the job situation around Christmas time - it's was really hard to find a job, especially because I only had about three month in Australia (as part of my world trip) and I wanted to see all different sides and parts of the country, which made it really hard to work, because of the licenses (e.g. RSA) and because of the massive competition
